9-Year-Old's Operation - Calcutta

9-year-old in Calcutta with thalassemia needs funds for liver & spleen operation.

From: sejuti das <anurupabony@gmail.com>
Subject: rajib kayal an appeal
To: chandni_parekh AT yahoo.com
Date: Sunday, April 26, 2009

Rajiv Koyal – 9 year, son of Samar Koyal - a daily labourer, resides in a bustee just beside AMRI Hospital, Dhakuria, at 22, Panchanantala Lane, Kolkata – 700 029 (P.O. Golpark).

He was diagnosed with Thalassemia – Type B at the age of 1 year 7 months after being wrongly treated at Bangur Hospital for some time as malaria patient having malnutrition and low blood count.

After being diagnosed as Thalassemia patient he was being treated at National Medical College Hospital.

Though regular Blood Transfusions have maintained the child lack of proper Iron Chealation, proper diet has resulted in growth retardation and other associated problems from which Type – B patients suffer.

Meanwhile, he was infected with Hepatitis C virus through one of the many blood transfusions he took though all such blood transfusions should have gone through mandatory HEP – C check.

The child is suffering with no fault of his own and due to the lack of knowledge and preventive steps that could have been taken by his parents, the treating doctors and society at large which fail to ensure all these. This makes all of us responsible to the child to save his life and do whatever we can do to save his life.

At present, Rajiv is suffering from an enlarged liver which needs immediate operation. As because of this he is finding it difficult to eat as there is always a tendency of vomiting as well as reduced will to eat.

He is also suffering from massive Spleenomegally (Spleen – 15 cm) which is to be taken care of immediately.

He desperately needs proper Iron Chealation and proper monitoring just to live as a normal Thallassemia patient.

Most importantly, he needs anti – retrovirus treatment, that is Anti-Hepatitis – C vaccination which is costly but can save the child from sure death. If not given then there is every chance that the child will face liver damage at 20 and liver cancer within 28.

Mrs Sharmila Chandra, renowned hematologist, when contacted, has proposed some tests for Rajiv which will cost Rs 20,000 (approx) and Liver Function Test, HEP-C Genotype testing, and other tests required for present maintenance.

If Rajiv is to be operated for liver and spleen and be given proper HEP-C vaccination he will need almost Rs. 1.5 to 2 Lakh.

His family income is Rs 800. (The Local Councilor has certified this taking into account Rajiv's plight and that he will need help to live).

This is an appeal to help the child. Let us come all together and show that we care.

We stand between Rajiv and death.

If he is operated for Liver reduction, given proper Iron Chealation, and Hepatitis vaccinations he can live like any normal Thalassemia patient for a long time.

IIT Admission Fee - Gujarat

Scholarship/information on funds for admission in IIT sought by a student in Gujarat:

From: Hiren Rana <hrana87@yahoo.com>

Sent: Friday, April 24, 2009

Subject: Scholarship plea

Respected Sir/Madam

i am hiren rana from Navsari Gujarat

My younger brother appeared for IIT-JEE as he wants to get into IIT.

..

he didnt want to study in any local college...

so he took a drop for a year despite scoring a decent 93 % in 12 th

science exam in 2008..

Due to his talent his mentor had provided him a free coaching for IIT-JEE exam without any fees...and he is scoring 325 marks as per the solution provided on net,,,which will get him an ALL INDIA RANK  between 100 and 300..

but my father owns a pan-masala shop in navsari..and our economic condition

is too feeble to pay the fees for IIT....we cant take up loan as interest rate would be burdensome...

i have heard about your trust aiding students attain better education...so

i wanted to know the procedure to apply for the scholarship for my brother..

...

....

Hoping to have a word from you,,

                                                                          Thanks

                                                                             Hiren Rana
